Your Soothing Phantom Voice

I was reading a blog once and came across a post the author wrote about the effect reading reading good books (particularly fiction) has on our brains as opposed to watching TV.

In one of his replies to a comment under this post the author observed that reading is an intimate act.

I was struck by that statement’s truth. Reading requires more brain activity than video does.

In order to read you have to recognize words, interpret meanings, grapple with the ideas being presented, and use your imagination to construct scenes.

Reading is a silent conversation held inside your head between you and the author as he or she fills your mind with their thoughts.

This is also the case with those who read your handwritten notes. Someone reading your note is being exposed to your affection in written form.

You are speaking those words inside their head and to their heart. That is intimate.

And speaking of intimacy, today is a week from Thanksgiving. The holiday celebrating all the many blessings of life and the past year, including the intimacy of family and friends.

Sometimes, though, you don’t get to celebrate face to face with everyone you love on Thanksgiving. But that doesn’t mean they have to go without a reminder of your love and gratefulness, for which purpose greeting cards are very useful.
