Why you should talk about yourself in your letters (Pt.2)

I own an autobiography called All Is Grace written by Brennan Manning, a Catholic priest.

This short book is a moving testimony to the unfailing grace of God in the life of a man who struggled with the effects of an abusive childhood and a drinking habit.

Even though Mr. Manning was writing about himself you come away with a deeper awe of God and a greater hope for yourself.

But this isn’t a book review. My point is your stories aren’t as much about you as you might think. Your stories exist for the benefit of others and the glory of God.

According to Paul the apostle, God gives us comfort in our failures and trials so that we can in turn comfort others who are in pain (2 Cor. 1:3).

Our victories and joys were also meant to be shared as a way of stoking the faith and joy of those around us.

When you see your stories in this light they become no longer about yourself only but also about what is possible for the other person and about the faithfulness of God.

So, talk about yourself in your letters to enrich others. You have been given those stories for a reason.
