Humans are born creatures of the physical realm. We have an innate need to feel, touch, taste, and see physical objects.

Deprive a person of all outward physicality and society and you may well reduce them to something less than an animal. They’ll experience extreme emotional distress after a while.

 

In a darker world, this is why solitary confinement is favored as a mode of punishment. It allows you to hurt your prisoner in a deeper way.
