How they celebrate birthdays in…the United Kingdom

What ho! I have a couple British birthday traditions to share with you this Wednesday.

The first one is for the kiddos. It’s a game called “pass the parcel.” All the children sit in a circle and pass a multi-wrapped gift to one another in time to some music.

When the music stops the child left holding the gift must remove the first layer of wrapping paper and perform whatever request has been written on a piece of paper inside the wrapping, a bit like Simon Says.

The gift continues to be passed from one child to the next, each one performing whatever written request they discover, until the last layer of wrapping paper is removed revealing the gift inside. The child who reveals the gift keeps it.

The second tradition is for the grownups who are very grown up indeed. When you reach your one hundredth birthday in Britain, you receive a letter of congratulations from the ruling monarch. There’s some encouragement to keep healthy serving tables and jogging!

To your card giving,

Grace Arant
