How many watts is your voice?

Do you ever consider how much light your words give to those around you?

Sigmund Freud once related a story about a three-year-old boy calling out to his aunt when he lay alone in a dark room one night.

“Auntie,” cried the little fellow, “talk to me! I’m frightened because it is so dark.”

His aunt answered him from another room, “What good would that do? You can’t see me.”

The boy replied to her, “That doesn’t matter. When you talk, it gets light.”

Sometimes you can’t be beside your loved one when they are experiencing a rough patch in life. Or you can be with them sometimes but you have other commitments that require you to spend long hours away.

That’s when paper and pen come in handy. You can sit down and write either a long letter (if your loved one is at a distance) or a short note reminding your loved one of the love and care that surrounds them.

You may not think much of your efforts. But they will be like the switch of a lamp for your loved one. When they read your words, a light comes on inside them, helping them feel just a little bit braver in the dark around them.
