Write notes like an Ivy Leaguer

Carrie Pierce in her book Handwritten Notes relates a story about how she was accepted into an Ivy League school.

She didn’t have any extraordinary grades or scores that would get her into an Ivy League in the first place, but she was determined to try anyway.

She sent in her application and began calling the admissions office every day to see whether she had been excepted.

She began feeling sorry for the lady who answered the phone all the time having to answer not only her questions but also the questions of all the other anxiously waiting applicants.

So, what did Carrie do? She wrote the lady a note express her gratitude for the lady’s patience and respect for the time she took to answer Carrie’s questions.

Carrie didn’t write the note to manipulate the lady. She wrote it out of genuine feeling.

Days later the lady called Carrie and told her, “I’ve got news. I’m not supposed to tell you this, but your in.”

Carrie never knew if that lady influenced the decision that allowed her into the college, but she did know that the note she sent had made a connection. The lady was excited for her.
