Moral: Writing first, death afterwards
If you’ve ever needed one glaring reason to sit down and write a letter to someone, I have it for you: you’re going to be dead soon.
Not your traditional reason for writing a letter (at least not for everyday writing) but true nonetheless.
Here’s what I mean.
I’ve written lots of letters and notes in my lifetime, possibly over a hundred. Each one holds an expression of my personality and affection for the recipient. The same goes for all the notes and letters I’ve received from others.
And so it is with all your handwritten correspondences. You are leaving behind a paper trail to those you love.
If you were to suddenly disappear from the earth’s face tomorrow would your loved ones be able to revisit your words and touch something you had your hands all over?
I don’t save the texts and emails I get from my mother. I do, however, still have notes she wrote to me when I was a little girl. We have each other’s paper trail.
How about you? Do you have a paper trail of letters from a dear friend? Do they have one from you?
If not the best time to start is today, and if you can start with a handmade greeting card so much the better. It may better guarantee your words will be preserved. And your friend will thank you for that someday.
